In a cereal legume intercropping, leguminous crops always demand the application of appropriate inoculants which ultimately improves efficiency of applied fertilizer and yield of companion crop. Rhizobium is a group of bacteria capable of providing nutrients for soybean crops. When symbiotic with legume crops, this group of bacteria is able to infect plant roots and form root nodules. A field trial was laid out to evaluate the effect of rhizobia inoculation techniques and nitrogen rates on the production potential of soybean and maize, intercropped in autumn season at Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. The experiment was carried o ut in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with factorial arrangement having three replications. Factor A was nitrogen (N) rates i.e., 0%, 50% and 100% of the recommended dose of N (250 kg ha -1) for maize and factor B was inoculation techniques i.e., no inoculation, soil inoculation and seed inoculation. Results indicated that both factors not only improved 100 -seed weight, seed oil contents and protein contents of soybean but also plant height, 1000-grain weight and biological yield of maize. Interaction showed that 100% N along with seed inoculation not only enhanced number pods per plant (27.00) and grain yield (1.25 t ha -1) of soybean but also number of grains per cob (325) and grain yield (5.75 t ha -1) of maize. However, a notable decline in grain yield of maize (2.19 t ha -1) and soybean (0. 50 t ha -1) were observed in those plots where application of nitrogen and inoculants were not carried out. It was concluded that in maize -soybean intercropping, 100% N for maize and soybean seed inoculation were the best strategy to enhance the yield of both crops on sustainable basis.
