Abstract

The yield of maize crop is incredibly affected by many herbivores with stem borer ( Chilo partellus Swinhoe) being recognized as one of the considerable limiting factor that causes serious losses to corn production all over the world. As the knowledge regarding its susceptibility is lacking, therefore studies on its occurrence and prevalence was carried out in six local (Sahiwal -2002, Neelam, Agaiti -85) and hybrid (Mon -6714, TG -46B90, Mon -6789) maize cultivars during the year 2017, at Post Graduate Entomological Research Farm, University of Agriculture Faisalabad Pakistan. The results indicate that amongst various maize genotypes screened; hybrid TG 46B90 (0.0357), Mon-6714 (0.0470) and Mon - 6789 (0.0537) were found least susceptible while local Sahiwal-2002 (0.0674), Agaiti-85 (0.0675) and Neelam ( 0.0869) w ere found susceptible to plant percent infestation on the basis of plant infestation rating scale. The hybrid genotype TG 46B90 (0.2), Mon -6714 (0.2666) and Mon -6789 (0.2) were found least susceptible while local check Sahiwal -2002 (0.5), Agaiti-85 (0.5) and Neelam (0.2 866) were found susceptible to perce nt dead heart formation. Maximum mean larval infestation was found on Agaiti -85 (1.1333), Mon-6714 (1.0666) and Neelam (1.2) while larval infestation in Sahiwal-2002 (1), Mon -6789 (0.8666) and TG 46B90 (0.9333) was found minimum . Genotypes TG 46B90 (0.1533), Agaiti-85 (0.1733) and Mon -6789 (0.0733) were found resistant while genotypes Sahiwal-2002 (0.3333), Mon- 6714 (0.2066) and Neelam (0.2733) were found moderately resistant to pupal infestation. These results affirm higher ability of resistant genotypes to resist against stem borer infestation and are therefore recommended for cultivation in stem borer sensitive areas.
