Industrial wastewater adversely affecting our cultivated soils. Some areas of Faisalabad, Pakistan ( 31° 25' 7.3740'' N and 73° 4' 44.7924'' E ) are severely affected by industrial wastewater because cultivated land is being irrigated by this contaminated water . The industrial waste water is the source of heavy metals including cadmiu m. Accumulation of cadmium in addible portion of plants is harmful because many disorders in h uman population are associated with chronic intake of cadmium. Experiment was conducted to evaluate the five wheat varieties (Punjab, FSD2008, Galaxy, Anaj&Ujala) under different levels of cadmium (5mg/L, 10mg/L, 15mg/L) stress. Experiment was carried out for two weeks in plastic pots filled with sand which was fed with different concentrations of cadmium (Cd.) salt. The phytotoxicity percentage of cadmium on root, shoot, young seedling growth, seedling vigor index and tolerance indices were evaluated. All genotypes germinated well on different concentrations of Cd. Analysis of variance showed all the treatments and genotypes showed significant results for shoot length, but their interaction was non-significant. Treatments and their interaction with genotypes were found significant for root length . Phytotoxicity graphs exhibited variation for root length and shoot length. Maximum effect of Cd. was observed at 15 mg/L while minimum effect was detected at 5mg/L of Cd. Experiment indicated that Cd has created the toxicity at different concentration s. Root length and shoot length significantly decreased by increasing Cd. Concentration. Variety Punjab contributed maximum tolerance index while galaxy exhibited small value of tolerance index.
